it has been a while since I shot in the studio. I used any spare time to continue my abandoned houses project. Javier came in this morning and we made some quick photos before school started.

Final Burton House Shoot

I went back to make a few more images of this house. I wanted to get another image of the corner without the blue shape on the floor and a few more images of the wall. I noticed a possible image on the other side of the house. The copse of trees through the window worked out nicely due to the dim ambient. This small one room log home was about 12 feet by 20 feet. Amazing what families called home a hundred years ago. It reminds me of Thoreau's Walden. Simplicity is a seductive notion.

Went out yesterday afternoon. Got stuck in wheel-deep mud in January! Rescued by a trucker with a long chain. I am not much of a country guy so am amazed at the friendly generosity of people who live in outlying areas.

Visited five abandoned houses. Two were disappointing. Two were inaccessible. This one in Burton made the day somewhat worthwhile.

A friend bought some more farmland. On the property was a migrant worker's house. He offered to let me photograph the abandoned interior. I thought the contrast between the pin-up and the Virgins was interesting. Kind of like Mary and Mary Magdalene or something or other.

Went to get a pop during church and was driving around drinking. Couldn't very well go back to church with a 44 oz. Pepsi. Noticed the drive-in entrance was open. I tried out my new tripod and head. It was like moving up to a BMW or something.

This photo was taken in a house that I had previously photographed. I spent time looking at the original images and planed strategies to make the image better. Since the location is about a 15 minute drive from home, I could pick the light and circumstances that I thought would make it better. I think these images work much better than the previous ones.

I Drove up to Kilgore Sunday afternoon to explore some abandoned houses. I was northwest of the store near the timber line when my truck died. I hiked a mile to the main road, a gravel road that goes to the corner where the Kilgore Store is located and managed to wave down a hunter heading into the hills. He gave me a jump and all was well. He drove off and I happily drove back to the main road. After turning left onto the road, the engine stopped again. I was a about 2 miles from the store and began walking. when I arrived at the store, I was encouraged to find it still open. I found a good natured cowboy unwinding at the close of the day. He towed me to the store and I took a few photos of him and the store owner. AAA saved the day! The tow truck came from Ririe and I was home by 9:30.

Dropped Nancy and the kids off at a beach and went exploring. Came back way too late! Found this scene and spent a few hours photographing it with digital and a medium format film camera my friend Darren Clark let me borrow. Will be interesting to compare the results when I get the negatives developed.

Nancy wanted to build fires and make hotdogs and smores on the beach. These fires are larger bon fires built by local high school kids. The light on the left came from a group of people using flashlights to find their way back to the parking lot. They were shining the lights on the ground in front of them.

The last post featured the Teton Dam spillway in Fremont County. This post shows views of the actual dam and structures that were once underwater. All but one of these images were taken from the bottom of the canyon. You can see both up and down river shots. The failed dam structure is shown looking down river. The up river photo shows the once submerged canyon.

The breach and collapse of the the Teton Dam on June 5, 1976 caused tremendous environmental, economic, and social damage. The dam site is located in Madison and Fremont counties. You can visit the site by traveling on highway 33 towards Driggs, Idaho. Turn left on Teton Dam Road, 12000 East. The turn off is marked by an Idaho historical marker. The spillway is located on the north side of the river in Fremont County.

Vault Doors at the old First Security Bank, St Anthony

Mountain Man Rendezvous

While dropping off photos in St Anthony Saturday, I ran into a friend from high school. Caryn Esplin was at Ken's place with her photography students exploring the Ru Inn. She mentioned the rendezvous taking place near Drummand. Since I was on my way to Squirrel, I decided to check it out. I did not have much time so I walked in, snapped a few shots, and left for home to do some yard work. I'll plan on a visit next year and make some images.

Ken conceded to have his image recorded as part of the "documentation" process. He wasn't really keen about having his portrait made, but was good natured enough to indulge me. I really liked the old bright red vault doors. I wanted to use them in an image and used the chance to practice my feeble strobist skills. Ken, I really appreciate your time and collabortion.

Riverside Ru Inn, St Anthony, Idaho

I met Ken Matthews in St Anthony last week and spent way too much time shooting the breeze with the guy. He is an incredible guy who can lay stone, engineer, and talk philosophy and religion. Between paying jobs, he has a formidable personal project going...the restoration of "RU Inn" in St Anthony. The creative take on the project is what makes Ken's project distinctive and one heck of a story. I began documenting the process and hope to work with Ken to preserve the history of the place. The structure used to be a hotel and the old First Security Bank in St Anthony. Its future is in a fluid state: perhaps a destination inn, perhaps a artists' community space, perhaps? I hope to record the story as it unfolds.

I talked with the owner of this property for about an hour to build a relationship. The first response to my request to photograph the property was a NO. After shooting the breeze about life, he said, "I guess it would be all right to take a few photos. People are leary of strangers with cameras. I can't blame them. Now I have a connection with the owners of this property that may lead to more photos. FYI. I was drawn to the sculptural object in one of the photos. I asked about it and learned it is a mold for a motorcycle fairing. The owner used to build and race motorcycles. Now there is an interesting story to tell someday. They did request that the location of the property be kept private.

Darren and I photographed a home on Hal Harrigfeld's property. It was built by his great grandfather around 1917 and last lived in by his grandmother in the 1970s. It was a good opportunity to explore an abandoned home that was still pretty much intact, no graffiti or vandalism. I made Hal's acquaintance and he was gracious enough to meet us Saturday morning and unlock the door. He gave us free reign of the space. We, at least myself, just felt like I was just getting to understand the space and the visual potential of the property. The light was harsh and made it difficult to get the images we were pushing for. I hope to make another visit and make more images.

I drove out to Chester last night. It was raining at home and I was hoping to get a dry moment at the site. By the time I arrived the light was all by gone and no rain at all. Took a few pics and drove back home. The outside of the structure is pretty much buried now...need to get out more often. Anyway here are two the the three photos.

Henry Kraus Ghost

I drove out in the Burton area today to look around. Found an interesting looking old house and knocked on the nearby home to ask permission to photograph the old house. Every once and a while I run into ornery folks who just are plain mean…not today. I was greeted by Ann Hansen who introduced me to her husband Josh. Thy were both helpful and gracious. They are both interested in the history of place and welcomed me to explore the house. Ann told me that Henry Kraus grew up in the old home and the road they lived on was known as Kraus Road. The home is around 125 years old. While we were talking she told me that Henry was still in the house. I looked puzzled. I thought that perhaps he was buried under the floor or something. She matter-of-factly told me his ghost was present. Her husband Josh had seen him on several occasions. When I told her I wanted to photograph the attic, she told me that is where Henry is seen. Josh said that doors were constantly opening and shutting and he got tired of the "games." He went out to confront Henry and told Henry that he no longer owned the place and to behave. He use a bit stronger language, but Henry got the message. Now they can leave the front door open without it mysteriously closing. Josh is good natured and amiable. I enjoyed talking to him about his old dog, cat, cars, and his life. I appreciate both the Hansen's help. I plan on returning to photograph the exterior in better light. Perhaps Henry will find the new publicity about the home he grew up in amusing.

Syringa Landscape Craftsmen

I worked in the Boise area for a few weeks this summer as a landscape laborer. The crew was all from Mexico. I enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to get to know these guys. My Spanish improved and my appreciaton of guys who do back breaking work everyday increased. These guys are Sisyphus.

Canon Toys in Yellowstone

David Hinck and I went to the Canon sponsored photo day in Yellowstone. They made practically all their lenses available for people to use and experiment. I used the 5D Mark II and the 24mm TS lens and the 100mm macro. Lots of fun. We were pleasantly surprised to find Jon Long working the event for Canon. He helped make the day more than perfect. Jon, if you read this, thanks. Anyway here are a few of the photos taken with the 100mm macro.

I found this site through Darren who found it through Alex. Once again Alex is leading the way. I made these photos later in the evening. You can see the ambient outside light in the windows is not so blown out. However, this made the ambient inside light a bit contrasty. I want to go back at about noon and shoot the interiors again. It will be interesting to compare the images.

I visited this site again after looking at Darren's TS images. I was going try and achieve the same affect with stitching. I guess if you want to play with PS for hours you might come close. Any way here are some inferior results.

The economic crash has created a new subject to explore. Hundreds of new homes are vacant in cities that were booming under the inflated economy. Here, millions of dollars in real estate sits empty in just one of many new subdivisions that investors lost everything on the promise of big returns from developers. It is interesting to note that the developers lost little or nothing. I learned a new acronym while working in Boise...OPM...other peoples' money. That is the mantra of big time developers. They make big promises and use other peoples' money to pay themselves well and avoid excessive risk.
